Our Mission
Empowering the Upstate SC community to fill the gap for those Touched By ALS, by providing resources to assist with financial burdens, as well as physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
Our Story – in short
Through the years, small groups of community members who have been Touched By ALS themselves – as surviving family members and healthcare professionals, primarily – have joined forces to raise money, write grants, or seek out items for donation to the loaner closet at the Greenville Clinic. Finally in 2022, we were able to achieve our 501(c)(3) corporate status and form this foundation, Touched By ALS, to permanently support the Greenville ALS Clinic from outside the hospital system.
Our organization is the first of its kind in the Upstate of South Carolina that exists specifically to serve those diagnosed with ALS. Greenville, SC is home to one of two public ALS Clinics accredited by The ALS Association in South Carolina. Over the past two years, the number of individuals clinically diagnosed with ALS receiving care in Greenville has grown by 50%. According to the Greenville ALS Clinic, the out of pocket patient cost of care AFTER insurance is, on average, $110,000. Touched By ALS exists to alleviate the burdens that this fatal diagnosis brings to not only the patient, but to their family and loved ones. The thing about ALS is that it doesn’t just affect the patient who gets the diagnosis. It changes life for all of us who care about that person, as well as the roles we play in their new journey.
